CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
When we enter, my aunt is nowhere to be seen. I quickly pull Iolas upstairs to show him the rest of our barn, starting with my room.
âSo, this is where my queen sleeps.â
I walk towards my window and lean against my dresser. âIt is,â I smile. âWhat do you think?â
It is just how I left it. The bed is over on the left side, with white and red sheets. On the other side there is a maroon chair, a small closet, and a plant. The walls are a warm beige, and I have a small table with my old riding gloves next to the door.
He looks around, tracing over some old cloaks hanging on my door. Then he walks over to my bed, sitting down on it. It all but breaks from his weight, cracking as he moves around.
âIt isnât very sturdy,â Iolas says with wide eyes.
I chuckle. âLetâs just be thankful we wonât be spending our wedding night here.â
He smiles, but it is slowly replaced by an unfamiliar coldness. Chest rising and falling in a slow pattern as he looks at me.
âWhatâs wrong?â I ask while making my way over to him, sitting beside him next to my bed. The bed thankfully holds us both, but one wrong move and it will break.
With a sigh, he starts. âYou asked me about what happened with my father. And Iâ I told you it wasnât anything I couldnât handle.â
My stomach turns as he speaks. With clammy hands, I listen to his soft voice continue.
âFor you to truly understand what happened to me, why I became the way I was for so many years and why I acted the way I did when we first met, I need to show you something.â He shifts uncomfortably, turning himself towards me. âI have kept it a secret for over a hundred years, mostly because I never felt safe sharing it with someone. But with you⦠I want to share it.â He takes a breath, steadying himself to continue. âIâm going to take off my tunic, and I need you to know it isnât to charm you.â
Iâm now holding on to the side of the bed, desperately trying to keep my breathing in control.
Nodding my head, he stands up. He takes off his cloak and then his vest. Eventually, he unbuttons his black and green tunic as he watches me with great intensity.
I try to keep my eyes on him, but it is almost impossible when he fully opens his shirt, revealing his lean body. His muscles are defined, and sharp. Yet his frame is small. He is every bit as beautiful as I would expect him to be.
But then he turns around, and my heart drops. My grip on the bed tightens in an instant. It is taking everything in me not to faint. I see mark after mark displayed on his back. There are so many it is impossible to count.
I stand up, and slowly make my way towards him. With a trembling hand, I hover over some of the marks.
